Why 123 Kids Talk Doesn't Have an App: Putting Connection First
In today's digital age, it's easy to assume that every child-focused program or resource should have an app. After all, apps are convenient, engaging, and often seen as educational. However, at 123 Kids Talk, we've made a conscious decision to prioritise real-life connection over screen time, and that's why we don't have an app.
As Speech Pathologists and early childhood educators we have seen the clear benefits of dedicated, focussed parental engagement with their toddlers so our playgroups and programs do not include the use of any digital applications.
The Impact of Parental Phone Use on Toddlers
We want to be totally clear; this is not a rant about parents using their phones in front of children. Research has consistently shown that excessive screen time can negatively impact young children's development. But it's not just about the screen itself; it's also about what the screen replaces. When parents are engrossed in their phones, they're less likely to engage in meaningful interactions with their toddlers.
These missed moments of connection can have a profound impact:
- Language development: Toddlers learn language through back-and-forth conversations with their caregivers. When those conversations are replaced by phone scrolling, language acquisition can be hindered.
- Social-emotional skills: Eye contact, facial expressions, and shared laughter are crucial for developing empathy and understanding social cues. These are easily missed when a parent's attention is on a screen.
- Attention span: The constant stream of stimulation from screens can make it difficult for toddlers to focus on quieter, slower activities like shared reading time with books, or simply playing with blocks.
- Self-confidence: Feeling ignored or unimportant can lead to feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem in young children.
123 Kids Talk: Fostering Connections
Our program is built on the understanding that the most valuable learning happens in the context of responsive relationships. We encourage parents to put down their phones, turn off the TV, and truly engage with their children during the Chatter Box sessions.
By focusing on face-to-face interaction, we create an environment where:
- Language flourishes: Through songs, stories, and playful activities, children are immersed in language-rich experiences that promote vocabulary growth and communication skills.
- Emotional bonds strengthen: Shared activities and positive reinforcement create a sense of security and belonging, fostering healthy attachment.
- Attention and focus improve: Our carefully designed activities encourage children to stay present and engaged, building the foundation for future learning success.
The Bottom Line
We realise that mobile phones have become an inherent part of our daily life with many awesome benefits, but we also understand the impact they can have on your little one. This is why our RIME guides are 2 sided, laminated A4 size sheets. It gives you the tools that you need to boost your toddler’s speech and language without the downside. Some may say “old school” however we like to think of it as child friendly!
